Dear Knitters,
Autumn is back! What a relief to be finished with all of that sweltering Scottish summer weather. Besides, everyone knows that autumn clothes are far more interesting than all of that summer frippery! This autumn is set to be one of the best yet for knitters with a wealth of exciting new yarns (plus some old friends make a return visit).
But first, let me remind you about our National Knitting Week event in conjunction with Big Knit Out, our regular West End knitting meetup group and Miso Funky, creators of the West End’s most popular fashion and craft market! Big Knit Out is asking you to help raise money for children in distress by knitting a garment or accessory and donating it to our Big Knit Out sale at the next Miso Funky Market on October 21 at Hillhead Library. You will find a free pattern for some trendy fingerless mittens on the Big Knit Out page of our website but please feel free to donate any knitted garment. In addition to the sale, there will also be a stash swap. You can donate yarn from your stash (you know there is a ball that you will never use) and buy a ball from the swap basket. Each ball you buy will cost 50 p. All proceeds from the sale and stash swap will go to Childline. We are also looking for volunteers to help with the sale on Oct. 21!!
September is magazine month in the world of knitting. We have a wide range of the autumn issues of all of your favourite magazines in stock in our store and online shop. Vogue Knitting leads the way as usual with a brilliant autumn issue. Also new from Vogue this autumn is Knit Simple magazine which has over 30 patterns for beginner knitters with an extensive how to section in easy to follow instructions. Interweave Knits also has a very strong issue this year but its sister publication Knitscene (only published once a year) is currently my first choice for both a good read and a great collection of unique and fashionable patterns. So if you are looking for inspiration for your autumn knitting projects magazines are a great place to find some!
Noro has also launched a new season of colours in its ever popular Silk Garden, Iro and Kochoran yarns. Two new Noro books by Jane Ellison and Cornelia Tuttle-Hamilton offer a beautiful collection of handknit patterns for garments and accessories.
Sock yarn lovers will be excited to hear that we have new self-patterning brands in stock, Elemente, Prisma and soon to arrive Rainforest 2. Each ball contains enough yarn to make an adult pair of socks and comes with a free pattern. A portion of the proceeds from the sales of Rainforest 2 yarns will be donated to wildlife charities.
And speaking of self-patterning yarns, our hottest selling yarn of the month is the new Freedom Spirit 100 % supersoft wool by Twilleys of Stamford. I wasn’t even able to get this yarn out of the box before customers started buying it by the armload! The yarn is a heavy DK weight that knits to the same tension as Noro’s Kureyon or Silk Garden. It comes in a wonderful range of 8 colourways that knit up to form a fair-isle-like pattern all by themselves. It also felts brilliantly! The accompanying pattern book is equally wonderful with a range of knitted garments and accessories, including a felted handbag pattern. And as if that isn’t enough, Freedom Spirit costs less than £3 a ball (50g/ 120 meters). Too good to be true? No wonder it’s flying out of the shop!
All of our yarns, books and accessories are also available from our online shop. This month we are also launching a new line of yarn that is available on our online shop only! Knitglobal yarns are produced from very limited amounts of superior grade fibres that almost never make their way into the yarns of other large manufacturers. Imagine merino wool that is as soft and light as cashmere. Or a chunky weight baby alpaca that you could only imagine finding in a garment made by Prada or Dior! Have a look at the range in our online shop today!
Dare I say that there is even more wonder and excitement to come in October? I dare indeed!
Keep checking our homepage for new arrivals!
Happy knitting!
Katharine
